Cubus Solutions Newsletter: March 2018

One of the many topics discussed at the CUNA GAC last week was the Economic Growth, Regulatory Relief, and Consumer Protection Act, S. 2155. Right after GAC closed, the Senate announced that it will give floor consideration to the bill, which if enacted would mean the process for getting mortgage loans from credit unions will be easier and more straightforward for members. Additionally, it would adjust thresholds that ensure lending regulations, intended to reign in Wall Street banks, do the job without overburdening Main Street credit unions and small banks. And, it would change how credit unions designate certain apartment loans, thereby freeing up capital for additional small business lending. Because of Dodd-Frank, it’s been a long-held conviction that smaller financial institutions have been inadvertently burdened by well-intentioned rules and regulations meant to hold Wall Street accountable. Now, that could be reversed. You and your members can take action by reaching out to your congressional representative on the Common Sense Regulations website.

Credit Union Awareness Initiative Marketing Campaign
If you haven’t heard of this group, it’s an industry-led initiative and national effort to drive greater consideration of credit unions as the best financial services provider for consumers. It was designed to complement credit unions’ own marketing programs, and promotes the broad category by combating two pervasive myths that undermine consumer consideration: (1) That people can’t join, and, (2) that they can’t access their money. They created a high level messaging guide for credit unions to provide consistent and unified messaging for consumers that is a treasure trove! They did extensive research on the barriers, the opportunities, how to present the credit union brand, tone of voice, themes and talking points, key phrases and buzzwords to use, and so much more. This should be mandatory reading for all credit union employees. Go to and use the password openyoureyes.
